Exhibiting the Exhibition and Other Contemporary Art Reconstruction Activities

Project

Reconstruction is not new; it is a central aspect of popular culture and of art. However, reconstruction can in contemporary art bring forth a critical and reflexive perspective aiming to shed light rather than reproduce. This publication presents several approaches to reconstruction with variations on the theme, reflecting on the lack of consensus regarding the appropriate term to use to name this phenomenon – remake, reconstruction, reactivation. Different parts of the book explore reconstruction, as reflexive strategy, as performative response and focuses on the specific case of reconstruction proposed by the Galerie in 2019 of the exhibition Jana Sterbak: States of Being /Corps à corps presented in 1991 at the National Gallery of Canada.
